Eilat & Petra in Summer Without Tour

My wife and I are planning a trip to Israel in July and are wondering if traveling to Eilat and Petra is advisable.  We really want to go see and experience the sights but are worried about the high temperatures in southern Israel and Jordan causing the side trip to be miserable. Also, we would prefer to do the trip without a tour guide. From other forums I've read, it looks like once you cross the Jordan Border you can either hire a taxi or catch a bus from Aqaba, Jordan (I would probably prefer a taxi after negotiating a fair price). Does any one have any advice on traveling in the summer or going to Petra without a tour guide? Thanks!

     Hi Steve,

It is definitely hot in Eilat and Petra during July - no doubt. That said, my husband and I visited Petra in late June a few years back and we did it "alone". We crossed the border just north of Eilat and on the other side there were several taxis waiting. We hired one for the entire day and he drove us to Petra, waited for us to finish (we stayed about 5 hours) and then drove us back. When we arrived to Petra we paid our entrance fee to enter the park and we bought an excellent map in English which provided a thorough background of the area.  I highly recommend that you first check to make sure there are no travel advisories for Americans.

One more question. Is it possible to visit Petra on your own in one day or would you recommend an overnight stay?

    Hi Steve,

I would recommend to stay overnight as the atmosphere at night is great there and the hotel, which is in the mountain (like a cave) is wonderful and this want you won't have to rush.I did all the area (Ram wadi ) on my bike with an organized tour and we spend a night in Petra and it was a very nice experience.

I wish you a great tour.
