My wife and I are planning a trip to Israel in July and are wondering if traveling to Eilat and Petra is advisable. We really want to go see and experience the sights but are worried about the high temperatures in southern Israel and Jordan causing the side trip to be miserable. Also, we would prefer to do the trip without a tour guide. From other forums I've read, it looks like once you cross the Jordan Border you can either hire a taxi or catch a bus from Aqaba, Jordan (I would probably prefer a taxi after negotiating a fair price). Does any one have any advice on traveling in the summer or going to Petra without a tour guide? Thanks!
