Hi,
Israel is home to three great craters - known by the term "makhteshim". They were not formed as a result of a meteor, or some other satellite crashing into earth. They are the result of erosion. This is a unique geological formation, found only in Israel and the Sinai peninsula.
Each one is a valley surrounded by very high walls that is drained by a single river (or wadi).
The largest of the three craters is the Ramon crater. You can drive through the crater on the way south to Eilat. As you descend into the depths of the crater you can see a myriad of geological formations, rock forms, and the varying strata going as far back as 220 million years ago.
On your next visit to Israel, if you are travelling south of BeerSheva the makhteshim are something that you should not miss. They are truly breathtaking.
